Digital Literacy in Busy Classrooms

Ask a Tech Teacher

This is a common complaint in my grad school classes. Yes, teachers know students don’t have all of the skills they need for the technology required in education, but who has time to teach it? Newsweek has an interesting article addressing exactly that: How Schools Can Find the Time To Teach Digital Literacy Skills. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, computer science jobs are projected to grow 13% between 2020 and 2030.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

Depending on how you look at it, Ed Secretary Miguel Cardona’s assertion that “we’re closer to a reset in education than ever before” is either a beacon of hope at the end of a long, dark tunnel, or the opening of a new front in an increasingly polarizing culture war. Because my work as CEO of the national Breakthrough Collaborative involves middle-schoolers with college aspirations and college students who aspire to become advocates and teachers, I’m always inclined to take the optimistic view.

Students Have Different Thinking Speeds. Inclusive Teaching Means Realizing That.

Though it may be tempting to try to teach faster to "catch up" on missed content, we contend that the best course of action is to slow down and go into greater depth to ensure that students learn the most important ideas and skills deeply and are able to apply them in meaningful ways.
