And indeed we had intellectual interests that should have overlapped. Ed had started with computers in 1956—as part of one of the very first cohorts of programmers. But his almost lifelong desire to “program physics” did successfully lead him to the concept of reversible logic, and to what’s now called the “ Fredkin gate ”.
