Predicting the future: the power of modelling

Futurum

Predicting the future: the power of modelling. Published: June 16, 2022. It is difficult for us as individuals to feel that we can do anything about global challenges – such as climate change, pandemics, antibiotic resistance and sustainable food production. They are incredibly complex, involve governments and other agencies, and are influenced by economic trends and environmental factors, making the challenges unpredictable.

Room to Create

Get Caught Engineering

. . . If you were asked to imagine the perfect environment for a STEM classroom, would you picture gleaming, large tables, rows of shelves for storage and neatly labeled materials? While these things ARE very important, and we actually address them in another blog, we at Get Caught Engineering® feel that a STEM classroom is much more than organization and layout.

Why does soap make bubbles ?

Smore Science

What causes surface tension in water ? Have you ever tried to make a bubble bath in plain water? That would be just a bubble-free bath! In order to make bubbles in a liquid, you have to be able to “stretch” its surface to trap a gas (like air) inside. When you blow up a balloon, you have to blow air hard enough to stretch the rubber. Water alone is too strong to stretch, because of what we call surface tension.

Test Correction Mastermind

The Blog of Phyz

I clearly wanted to turn assessments (summative assessments, mind you) into learning tools, as evidenced by Test Correction Journals (see previous post). Simulation and experimental evidence for 2021 AP Physics 1 problem 4 - block and cylinder on incline

Jacobs Physics

About half of the videos in my 2020 AP Live series discuss released AP Physics 1 free response problems, including experimental evidence for the solutions. I use these videos regularly during exam review time: students solve a problem, then if they don't do well, they are tasked with watching the corresponding video. I need to start updating with experiments covering the released problems since 2020.

Alien Intelligence and the Concept of Technology

Stephen Wolfram

The Nature of Alien Intelligence. “We’re going to launch lots of tiny spacecraft into interstellar space, have them discover alien intelligence, then bring back its technology to advance human technology by a million years”. I’ve heard some pretty wacky startup pitches over the years, but this might possibly be the all-time winner. But as I thought about it, I realized that beyond the “absurdly extreme moonshot” character of this pitch, there’s some science that I’ve done that makes it clear tha
