Because computational methods originated in the natural sciences, some disciplines, such as chemistry and physics, have lots of research software at their disposal. Most RSEs have a degree and/or PhD in their chosen area, such as maths, physics or chemistry. It is important to study maths to at least A-level/post 16-years-old.
