After class, one day, I asked Pauling “What is a superconductor at the highest known temperature?” “Lick” Licklider —who persuaded Ed to join BBN to “teach them about computers”. He thought of it as a new way of storing textual information in a computer, and he called it “TRIE memory” (after “reTRIEval”).
