Super Science Fridays

As we continue to consider ways to give elementary science a comeback in many schools- here is a video of a school in Brooklyn where they have implemented Super Science Fridays. We know from research and from many of our own lived experiences that adding intentional science time at the elementary grades leads to many fringe benefits such as improved student attendance, increased positive student feelings about school, and greater stamina and engagement with other content areas (reading, writing, math, etc). As you watch the video- what do you notice about what the students are doing and saying? What do you wonder? How might we all support more time for science learning in the elementary grades?

This was so interesting to me! My focus is science in secondary education, but seeing science implemented in primary schools was so fascinating to me. When you think of science being taught at this age, you would think very basic, probably a decent amount of hands-on activities, but maybe missing the why’s behind the science. In this article/video I learned so much about the level of understanding primary school students hold about science. I think it is amazing how schools are determined to teach this at a young age. This can expose all types of students to the field of science, increase girls’ motivation to continue learning science in later years and also teach all students about the importance of science in everyday life. This is truly amazing!
