Phenomenon or Not a Phenomenon?

Last weekend- when we were experiencing some very cold temperatures -my wife and I were on a walk and we observed some frozen mud puddles on the ground. They had really interesting designs so I took some pictures. So, what do you think? Could these be used as some kind of anchoring phenomenon or lesson-level phenomenon in a unit? I’m not sure which NGSS PEs would be good matches…Either way- there is something interesting here and these images could definitely be used to surface some noticing and wonderings.

NOTE: These are completely frozen all the way through. I could easily stand on them. Each frozen puddle is about 1.5 to 2 feet across.

So I’ll ask the questions: (feel free to leave your thoughts in the Comments)

  • What do you NOTICE?
  • What do you WONDER?
