The committee on Understanding and Addressing Misinformation about Science is organizing a virtual information gathering session on July 11, 2023, as part of its fourth committee meeting.

They are inviting folks to engage online in discussions focusing on comprehending misinformation within the historical and scientific context, as well as exploring the implications for addressing misinformation in light of advancements in information technology such as artificial intelligence and machine learning. The session will also provide an opportunity for the committee and the audience to engage in a Q&A session.

Speakers:

  • Michael Strevens, New York University
  • Sarah Kreps, Cornell University
  • Jenn Wortman Vaughan, Microsoft Research

The committee has been tasked with understanding and defining the extent and nature of the problem of scientific misinformation, as well as its varying impacts. They will identify potential solutions to limit the dissemination of misinformation and provide guidance on interventions, policies, and research aimed at reducing the harms caused by misinformation. We can look forward to a final report in 2024.
