SOLID Start, short for Science, Oral Language, and Literacy Development from the Start of School, is a groundbreaking project from Michigan State University dedicated to transforming the educational landscape for early elementary students. Focused on integrating science and literacy seamlessly into the curriculum, SOLID Start provides K-2 teachers with thoughtful professional development opportunities and cutting-edge resources.

At the heart of the SOLID Start project are standards-based, integrated science and disciplinary language and literacy curriculum materials intentionally crafted for young learners. These materials are designed to engage students through various components:

  1. ASK (Unit and Daily Driving Questions): Encouraging curiosity and inquiry, ASK prompts guide students to explore key scientific concepts.
  2. EXPLORE (Multi-Modal Investigations): Through hands-on experiences, students delve into science phenomena, fostering a deeper understanding.
  3. READ (Science Informational Text Read Alouds): Immersing children in the world of science literature, READ sessions enhance comprehension and vocabulary.
  4. WRITE (Science Writing and Drawing Opportunities): Providing avenues for expression, WRITE activities empower students to articulate their understanding through writing and drawing.
  5. SYNTHESIZE (Science Synthesis Discussions): Facilitating oral language development, SYNTHESIZE discussions encourage students to explain scientific phenomena.

SOLID Start incorporates invaluable Teacher Tips throughout the curriculum, offering guidance and support to educators as they implement these innovative units of study.

Recognizing the pivotal role of science and literacy in academic achievement and lifelong learning, SOLID Start addresses the current gap in many primary grade classrooms where our youngest learners tend to have limited time with science learning. By aligning with the rigorous standards set by the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and ELA standards, SOLID Start provides a guidebook for what a truly integrated ELA and science primary material might look like.

SOLID Start is free to access but you will need to sign up and sign an agreement HERE.

You will find four units for each grade level K-2…so 12 units total. A screenshot of the 1st grade scope and sequence is below.

These units could obviously be implemented in K-2 classrooms but could also be used as objects of study to learn about integrated K-2 ELA and science units and also in PD and teacher education. Enjoy.
