My STEM Friend: STEM Ambassador School Letters

With our schools now on their Summer holidays, we’ve wrapped up our My STEM Friend project here at the STEM Ambassador Hub in Merseyside and Cheshire for 2022/2023! Through the project, we asked classes to write letters to a STEM Ambassador pen pal – to get to know them, what they do and increase their science capital.

With hundreds of letters shared between young people and STEM Ambassadors (I think I’ve read close to 1,000), around 700 pupils inspired, fabulous feedback and hundreds of hours of volunteering from our ambassadors I think we can call it a success!

A huge thank you to all the ambassadors, from across the UK, who have answered hundreds of questions about their jobs, chocolate factories, the speed of sound, building bridges, traffic lights, what food they like, what pets they have (incl. photos of pet goats!), what sports they play, riding unicycles, Richard the Thirds bones and what football teams they support (definitely the most asked question!) And also to the brilliant teachers, who helped organise and facilitate the students taking part.

Alongside the numerous 5-star reviews from the students and comments about their STEM Friends inspiring them, I’ve been told by one class teacher that the children who actively disliked writing ended up enjoying writing their letters to their STEM Friend (and they were all brilliant letters!)

We even have a future footballer or two that now know they could be engineers working on the football stadium instead – the plan is apparently to do this when they retire from professional football.

It’s definitely been a busy but brilliant year getting to read all the letters shared between pupils and STEM Friends.
