Year 12: What is a Nuffield Research Placement?

Y12 students can apply skills and knowledge learned at school and work alongside industry professionals on a Nuffield Research Placement – what an amazing opportunity!

The Nuffield Research Placements programme provides engaging, hands-on research projects, where Year 12 students have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution towards the work of a host organisation through a well-supervised but independent research collaboration.

What is a Nuffield Research Placement

When? – During summer holidays after Year 12 (England, Wales & Northern Ireland) or S5 (Scotland).

How long? – 4-6 weeks in total. This includes independent study ahead of 2 weeks for the real-world placement collaboration activities.

What? – A well-supervised but independent placement relating to an area of science, quantitative social science, computing, technology, engineering or maths – or a combination!

Cost? – You can take part in a placement at no cost. Travel costs are reimbursed and you may also be eligible to receive a £200 subsidy.

Where? – Placements take place in a variety of locations including offices, museums, research centres, laboratories or fieldwork settings.
