OTT 149: 3 Interesting Ideas for Halloween in Your Primary Classroom

Are you ready for Halloween in your classroom?

If you have been opening your emails or listening to OTT, you will know that I have shared some great Halloween literature with you to spook up your classroom on Episode 148: More Halloween Books to Love and way back in Episode 50: 7 Sensational Halloween Books Kids Will Love.

I also talked about 3 Tactics to Breath New Life Into Science in October on Episode 147.

Idea # 1: Adding Halloween into Science With a Halloween Matter LapBook

This is such a fun way to teach Matter with Halloween ooze, eyeballs, and green mystery liquid. So fun!

This unit covers the second grade standards for Matter using original informational text told from Wendy the Witch. Wendy explains observable properties of matter, measuring properties of matter with size, weight, volume, and temperature. Then along comes Wilma the Witch to discuss how liquids and solids change.

Something extra fun about this unit is students are creating a lapbook kind of like a science notebook on steroids. All of the information is created in a manner that can be included inside the lap book with mini flipbooks, and tab books, pockets for vocabulary words such as volume, property, and mixture. And my favorite thing about this unit is the hands-on science experiments.

Idea # 2: Makerspace Moments in Literature for Halloween

These units focus on the Engineering Design Process and literature standards such as asking and answering questions, vocabulary, characters and setting, and more.

I speak in depth about My MML Halloween bundle in episode 96. Go take a listen for more on that. You can also hop on TpT for my Halloween Makerspace Moments in Literature Bundle. These will also work very well for sub plans in a pinch.

Idea # 3: Halloween Rhyming Bundle

Rhyming is made easy and fun with this digital and print BUNDLE. This is perfect for Halloween centers or learning stations. All you need is a device and access to Google Drive or One Drive OR the copies printed and you are all set. Students will determine if a pair of words rhyme or not, match rhyming pairs by dragging and clicking pictures, as well as produce a rhyming word with a picture. The print version makes teaching rhyming fun and game-like with 5 fun games and activities including bingo for 4 variations of the bingo board. Perfect for centers or learning stations.
