National BSL Day & Deaf Awareness Week
In support of National British Sign Language Day & Deaf Awareness Week, we’ve created a video of our team sharing some BSL Basics. Celebrate National BSL Day! 28 April 2023
On 28 April 2022, the British Sign Language (BSL) Act was passed by the UK Parliament, recognising BSL as an indigenous language of Great Britain. To commemorate this milestone, the British Deaf Association has proposed that the Deaf community now celebrate National BSL Day every year on the 28th of April.

Deaf Awareness Week 2023 1-7 May “Access to Communication”
The aim of this year’s Deaf Awareness Week is to promote greater awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by the deaf community in accessing communication.
“The deaf community often faces significant barriers to communication, which can lead to social isolation, limited employment opportunities, and reduced access to essential services. To address these issues, this year’s Deaf Awareness Week will focus on raising awareness of the communication needs of the deaf community and advocating for greater access to communication tools and services.”
Individuals, organisations, and governments are encouraged to work together to create a more inclusive society where deaf individuals have the same access to communication as their hearing counterparts.

The British Deaf Association estimates that British Sign Language (BSL) is the preferred language of 87,000 deaf people in the UK. BSL has a different grammar and word order to English and doesn’t have a written form. For many deaf people, BSL is an important part of their deaf identity.
