'When I talk to students these days they tell me that when they want to learn something they're interested in, it usually is not teachers or parents they turn to. It’s Google , YouTube, or to others they find online ( aka their PLN ) who engage in their activities of interest. These kids aren’t just playing on the computer either. They mean serious business.

Image Source: [link]. The AP Biology Book Club was created as an interesting way to introduce my students to the science writing genre. The College Board recommends that students in an AP Biology course read nonfiction works and other outside reading to get them beyond the textbook. There are so many great books to choose from, I found it hard to select just one or two.

'Storyboard That is a fantastic Web 2.0 tool for digital storytelling w/ educational portal. This portal allows for educators to create student accounts (even batch upload) and assign them to their class via a URL and unique code (i.e. ClassDojo). Not only can and educator create, manage, adjust privacy settings, and more, they can create storyboard templates and assignments for their class.

Yes, we design our courses so that the teacher can deliver them in class without having previously gone through the course or completed the industry certification. But, this doesn’t mean that we don’t get excited when one of our teachers goes on to earn the industry certification. The same credentials that their students receive. Educators are always cheering on their students, and this is our chance to cheer on one of our educators.

The videos are free and generally run between 5 - 10 minutes. Should you decide to use them, you may want to follow these guidelines from WNET for using digital media in the classroom.

'Google Hangouts on Air let you conduct a video conference with up to ten people that is live streamed and taped for later viewing. Earlier versions of hangouts, were quite clunky with a few glitches, but they''ve come a LONG way since I first wrote about them. Two great new features are that you can now do Google Hangout on Air events and you can get the embed code, YouTube link, and even link in advance.

'Comment Bubble is a neat little site that I just found out about from Ozge Karaoglu on Technology & Learning. The way this works is a user uploads a video and then selects what kind of feedback/comments they want to allow. Once this is done a person can then leave text, audio, or even video comments to any video. This is a great way to carry on a discussion about a video, as well as generate interactive graphs.

'The Answer Pad the great student response system and mobile learning tool has just been updated w/ a brand new polished look. This is an excellent site/app that allows educators to turn their classroom paperless and do all testing/assessing on an iPad. Also, educators can use Answer Pad for any subject and easily integrate it into their curriculum.

'StoryMap JS is a new (beta) site that I just found out about from Richard Byrne''s excellent blog. It reminds me a lot of MeoGraph in that it lets users create digital stories surround by maps. On these maps a user can add text, video, image, to create a story linked to the map. StoryMaps is a great learning tool that History/SS teachers could use to have students create historical digital stories or for digital storytelling.

'AR Flashcards Shapes & Colors is the brand-new educational augmented reality iOS app from Mitchlehan Media (i.e AR Flashcards Space ). Like AR Space, all a child has to do is point the iOS device at the printed flashcard to display a 3D rendered animal holding up a shape. A user can then take a snapshot or even hear the shape by pressing on the sound button.

'Shadow Puppet Edu is a fantastic iOS app for digital storytelling. Recently, they released a major update which allows users to: map search - allowing users to add maps or satellite images, expanded educational image search, new background images, more drawing tools, more sharing options (i.e. Evernote, Google Drive, etc.) and best of all 30+ activities that helps educators find ideas for a wide range of subjects linked to Common Core Standards.

'Level it Books is the excellent mobile app (iOS/Android) that people everywhere are using to scan a book and get a Reading/Lexile Level. Educators are using it to create a digital library of class books, as well as creating a class roster of students w/ their Read Level. Also, a user can add a book, select a "book of the day", and manually search for any book as well.

'ClassDojo the mega popular behavior management/positive reinforcement site has just released their free mobile (iOS/Android) app for messaging. CD Messenger is a free simple to use app that allows educators and parents to stay in touch through messaging on their mobile device. Best of all, it''s private, safe to use, and allows people to send attachments (i.e. photos, documents, etc) as well.

'EDpuzzle the fantastically simple tool to turn any video into a lesson has just launched a new "folder" feature that makes it easy for educators/students to organize and curate their videos/lessons. All a user has to do is login, create a folder, and then select the videos they want to add. Also, a user can move a folder into a folder to make things even easier (I wish the iPad would let u do that).

'FlashDecks is a great easy to use site for educators looking to create or find digital flashcards. These decks can be used on any browser based device and can contain all types of media (i.e. images) and track student usage. It shows how many questions a user gets right or wrong and used spaced repetition to help them learn a topic. A user can also put cards into collections to help keep them organized.

'NameCoach is an interesting new site that people are using for learning people''s names. This could be a useful tool for educators needed to learn student''s names and the proper way to pronounce them. The way this works is a user creates a name/web page and then has the student''s speak their names. The audio gets embedded into a page and a user can access them all on one page at anytime.

'Booktrack Classroom is a innovative free site for adding a soundtrack or sound effects to a story/book. This is a great way to generate and boost student creativity in the classroom as well as help w/ reading comprehension. Classrooms are using this for project based learning and for gaining student interest in the process of Reading and Writing. Also, there is a free iOS/Android app for reading published Booktrack "books".
