Answers

1. Answer :

5.769

Underline 7, the digit at the tenths place.

5.769

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 6, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 7 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 7.

Therefore, 5.769 rounded to the nearest tenth is 5.8.

2. Answer :

Underline 3, the digit at the tenths place.

2.345

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 4, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 3 at tenths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of 3.

Therefore, 2.345 rounded to the nearest tenth is 2.3.

3. Answer :

Underline 0, the digit at the tenths place.

7.0592

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 0 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 0.

Therefore, 7.0592 rounded to the nearest tenth is 7.1.

4. Answer :

Underline 9, the digit at the tenths place.

5.9743

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 7, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 9 at tenths place and drop all the digits to the right of 9.

Therefore, 5.9743 rounded to the nearest tenth is 6.0.

5. Answer :

In 3.47, the digit at the tenths place is 4.

The digit to the right of 4 is 7, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 4 at tenths place and drop the digit 7 to the right of 4.

Therefore, 3.47 rounded to the nearest tenths is 3.5.

7. Answer :

Underline 7, the digit at the tenths place.

52.79

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 9, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 7 at tenths place and drop the digit 9 to the right of 7.

Therefore, 52.79% rounded to the nearest tenth is 52.8%.

8. Answer :

Formula for circumference of a circle :

= 2πr

Substitute π  3.14 and r = 8.

 2(3.14)(8)

= 50.24

Underline 2, the digit at the tenths place.

= 50.24

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 4, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 2 at tenths place as it is and drop the digit 4 to the right of 2.

50.24 rounded to the nearest tenth is 50.2.

Therefore, the circumference of the circle is about 50.2 cm.

9. Answer :

Formula for area of a circle :

= πr2

Substitute π  3.14 and r = 12.

 (3.14)(12)2

= 452.16

Underline 1, the digit at the tenths place.

= 452.16

The digit to the right of the underlined digit is 6, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 1 at tenths place and drop the digit 6 to the right of 1.

452.16 rounded to the nearest tenth is 452.2.

Therefore, the area of the circle is about 452.2 cm2.

10. Answer :

Instead of rounding to the nearest tenth, Daniel has moved the decimal place.

The correct answer is 1.5.

11. Answer :

Let A = 7.22 and B = 5.12.

Then the difference is

= 7.22 - 5.12

= 2.1

Given : Alex rounds A to the nearest tenth and calls his answer C. He rounds B to the nearest tenth and calls his answer D.

Then, C = 7.2 and D = 5.1.

The difference is

= 7.2 - 5.1

= 2.1

The difference between A and B and the difference between C and D are are same.

But, Alex says the difference between A and B cannot be the same as the difference between C and D.

So, Alex is incorrect.
