Giraffes

STEMe

Houston, TX Everyone knows that the tallest land animal in the world is the Giraffe (Giraffa Camelopardalis). The name giraffe comes from an Arab word, zar?fah, which translates to “fast walker”. Some also called the giraffe, a “camel-leopard” because they believed giraffes were a mix between a camel and a leopard; that’s where the name Camelopardalis comes from.

Science2Art 2022 – Another Great Year for our Regional Life Sciences Community

CTE Learning

Here is the most recent Science2Art project I worked on with the Storylight Studios team (Bret and Aron) and BioNexusKC team (Shaylee and Jennifer). Every year I get an opportunity to meet some of the best and brightest in the region, and I always find it inspiring and so thankful for where I get to live. The Bionexus KC Sci2Art program and auction raise money and awareness for STEAM education in our region.

Mail Time: how do you rank the forces on a block dropped onto a spring?

Jacobs Physics

I was asked about a ranking task in which block 1 is dropped onto block 2, which is attached to a vertical spring. The blocks compress the spring, and come briefly to rest in the position shown in the right-hand diagram: We're asked to rank the (magnitude of) three forces at this instant of maximum spring compression: Fa is the upward force of block 2 on block 1 Fb is the downward force of block 1 on block 2 Fc is the downward gravitational force of the earth on block 1 Student 1's reasoning was

Can Colleges Reach Beyond Campus to Foster ‘Digital Equity’ in Communities?

ED Surge

The community of Orangeburg, South Carolina, is home to two Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Unsurprisingly, these institutions—Claflin University and South Carolina State University—make the internet available to their students and faculty. In fact, earlier this year, the latter institution installed a brand-new, very zippy system. But just off campus in the surrounding neighborhoods, high-speed internet is hard to come by, and it tends to be expensive for folks in a county where C
