WHAT IS A COMPOSITE NUMBER

Definition of a Composite Number :

If a number is evenly (without remainder) divisible by at least three numbers, say 1, the number itsef and some other number, then it is called a composite number.

For example, if you consider the number 4, it is divisible by 1 and itself. And also, 4 is divisible by 2. So, 4 is a composite number.

The following are the one digit composite numbers.

4, 6, 8, 9

1 is not a composite number. In general, a composite number is evenly divisible by at least three numbers, say 1, the number itself and some other number.  But, 1 is divisible by only one number, that is 1 itself. And also, 1 is not a prime number. So, 1 is neither prime nor composite and it is a special number.

Note :

If a number is not composite, then it is prime.

Solved Questions

Question 1 :

List all composite numbers greater than 10 and less than 20.

Answer :

12, 14, 15, 16, 18

Question 2 :

How to check if a number is composite or not?

Answer :

Try to divide the given number by some number other than 1 and the number itself. If the given number is divisible by some number which is other than 1 and the number itself, then the given number is composite, otherwise it is a prime number.

Question 3 :

Is 29 a composite number? If not, what number is it?

Answer :

We can try to divide 29 by some number which is other than 1 and itself. 29 is not divisible by any number other than 1 and itself. So, 27 is not a composite number. If a number is not composite, then it is prime. So, 29 is a prime number.

Question 4 :

Is 12 a prime number? If not, what number is it?

Answer :

We already know that 12 is divisible by 1 and itself. Apart from that, it is also divisible by 2, 3, 4, 6. So, 12 is a composite number.

Question 5 :

List out the composite numbers from 1 to 100.
