Answers

1. Answer :

Combine the like terms.

7x = 14

Divide both sides by 7.

x = 14/7

x = 2

2. Answer :

3x + 4 - 6x = 46

Combine the like terms.

-3x + 4 = 46

Subtract 4 from both sides.

-3x = 42

Divide both sides by -3

x = -17

3. Answer :

2x - 5 - x + 7 = 12

Combining the like terms.

x + 2 = 12

Subtract 2 from both sides.

x = 10

4. Answer :

2y - 15 + 3y + 3 = 24

Combining the like terms.

5y - 12 = 24

Add 12 to both sides.

5y = 36

Divide both sides by 5.

y = 36/5

5. Answer :

3x + 2(x - 3) = -8

Using Distributive Property,

3x + 2x - 6 = -8

Combine the like terms.

5x - 6  =  -8

Add 6 to both sides.

5x = -2

Divide both sides by 5.

x = -2/5

6. Answer :

2(a + 3) + 3(a - 2) = 18

Using Distributive Property,

2a + 6 + 3a - 6 = 18

Combining the like terms.

2a + 3a + 6 - 6 = 18

5a = 18

Divide both sides by 5.

a = 18/5

7. Answer :

x + x/2 = 3

2x/2 + x/2 = 3

(2x + x)/2 = 3

3x/2 = 3

Multiply both sides by 2.

3x = 6

Divide both sides by 3.

x = 2

8. Answer :

3x + x/2 = 15

6x/2 + x/2 = 15

(6x + x)/2 = 15

7x/2 = 15

Multiply both sides by 2.

7x = 30

Divide both sides by 7.

x = 30/7

9. Answer :

x - x/3 = 4

3x/3 - x/3 = 4

(3x - x)/3 = 4

2x/3 = 4

Multiply both sides by 2.

2x = 12

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 6

10. Answer :

2x - x/4 = 14

8x/4 - x/4 = 14

(8x - x)/4 = 14

7x/4 = 14

Multiply both sides by 4.

7x = 56

Divide both sides by 7.

x = 8

11. Answer :

Given : When seven times a certain number is subtracted from 15, the result is -4.

Let x be the required number.

Then,

15 - 7x = -4

Subtract 15 from both sides.

-7x = -19

Divide both sides by -7.

x = 19/7

Therefore, the number is 19/4.

12. Answer :

Given : Four times a certain number minus 5 is equal to 7 more than twice the number.

Let x be the required number.

Then,

4x - 5 = 2x + 7

Subtract 2x from both sides.

2x -5 = 7

Add 5 to both sides.

2x = 12

Divide both sides by 2.

x = 6

Therefor, the number is 6.
