ORDERING NUMBERS WORKSHEET

Question 1 :

Order the numbers -2, -5, 4, 0, -3, -1, 3 from least to greatest.

Question 2 :

Order the numbers -2, -5, 4, 0, -3, -1, 3 from greatest to least.

Question 3 :

Order from least to greatest :

17/24, 5/12, 9/16

Question 4 :

Order from least to greatest :

1/20, 0.2, 0.074

Question 5 :

Order the decimal numbers 0.098, 0.123 and 0.985 from least to greatest.

Question 6 :

David recorded the following golf scores during his first week at a golf academy. Negative numbers represent scores below par, a standard score. In golf, a lower score beats a higher score.

Graph David’s scores on the number line, and then list the numbers in order from least to greatest.

1. Answer :

To order the numbers  -2, -5, 4, 0, -3, -1, 3 from least to greatest, locate them on a number line and mark them.

From the above number line, write the numbers from left to right to list them in order from least to greatest.

Thus, we get

-5, -3, -2, -1, 0, 3, 4

2. Answer :

In example 1 above, we got the order of the same numbers from least to greatest.

That is,

-5, -3, -2, -1, 0, 3, 4 ----(1)

To order the numbers  -2, -5, 4, 0, -3, -1, 3 from greatest to least, write the numbers in (1) in reverse order.

4, 3, 0, -1, -2, -3, -5

3. Answer :

Convert all the fractions into like fractions.

We can use LCM method to make the denominators of the fractions same.

Here, the denominators are 24, 12 and 16.

LCM of (24, 12, 16) = 48

Now, make the denominators of all the fractions as 48 using multiplication.

17/24 = (17 ⋅ 2)/(24 ⋅ 2) = 34/48

5/12 = (5 ⋅ 4)/(12 ⋅ 4) = 20/48

9/16 = (9 ⋅ 3)/(16 ⋅ 3) = 27/48

Now, compare the numerators of like fractions above and order them from least to greatest.

20/48, 27/48, 34/48

Substitute the corresponding original fractions.

5/12, 9/16, 17/24

Therefore, the order of the given fractions from least to greatest is

5/12, 9/16, 17/24

4. Answer :

Convert all the decimal numbers 0.2 and 0.074 into fractions.

0.2 = (0.2 ⋅ 10)/10 = 2/10 = 1/5

0.074 = (0.074 ⋅ 1000)/1000 = 74/1000 = 37/500

Substitute 1/5 for 0.2 and 37/500 for 0.74 in the given list of values.

1/20, 1/5, 37/500

Convert all the fractions above to like fractions.

We can use LCM method to make the denominators of the fractions same.

Here, the denominators are 20, 5 and 500.

LCM of (20, 5, 500) = 500

Now, make the denominators of all the fractions as 500 using multiplication.

1/20 = (1 ⋅ 25)/(20 ⋅ 25) = 25/500

0.2 = 1/5 = (1 ⋅ 100)/(5 ⋅ 100) = 100/500

0.074 = 37/500 = (37 ⋅ 1)/(500 ⋅ 1) = 37/500

Now, compare the numerators of like fractions above and order them from greatest to least.

100/500, 37/500, 25/500

Substitute the corresponding decimals.

0.2, 0.074, 1/20

Therefore, the order of the given decimal numbers from least to greatest is

0.2, 0.074, 1/20

5. Answer :

To order the given decimal numbers, first we have to write them in a table as given below.

To get the least one , compare the numbers in the first column (Units).

We get 0 in all the three decimal numbers in the first column.

So, let us move to the third column (Tenths) and compare the numbers.

In third column, we get 0 in 0.098.

Therefore, 0.098 is the least among the given decimal numbers.

In the same third column, we get 1 in 0.123.

This is the next least decimal number.

Therefore, the order of the given decimals from least to greatest is

0.098, 0.123, 0.985

Note :

In the third column also, if you get the same number in all the three decimal numbers, compare the numbers in the fourth column (Hundredths column) and so on.

6. Answer :

Step 1 :

Graph the scores on the number line.

Step 2 :

Read from left to right to list the scores in order from least to greatest.

The scores listed from least to greatest are

–5, –3, –2, –1, 0, 3, 4
