UNIT PRICES

Unit price is the price of one unit of a product or service. 

Formula to find unit price 

=  Total Cost/Quantity

Let us look at some example to understand unit prices. 

Example 1 :

A candy company used 36 pints of chocolate to make 4 boxes of candy. What is the rate of pints of chocolate per box?

Solution :

A candy company used 36 pints of chocolate to make 4 boxes of candy.

36 pints of chocolate =  4 boxes of candy

1 box  =  36/4 

=  9

Example 2 :

A machine worked for 4 hours and used 2 kilowatts of electricity. The machine used ____ of a kilowatt each hour it worked.

Solution :

If the machine works for 4 hours, it will use 2 kilowatts of electricity.

4 hours  =  kilowatts

1 hour  =  2/4 kilowatts

   =  1/2 kilowatts

Example 3 :

It took a pet store 7 weeks to sell 21 cats. What is the rate sold per week?

Solution :

Given information :

It took a pet store 7 weeks to sell 21 cats

7 weeks  =  21 cats

1 week  =  21/7

   =  3 cats

Example 4 : 

A jogger traveled 30 kilometers in 10 days. What is the rate he traveled per day?

Solution :

Given information :

A jogger traveled 30 kilometers in 10 days.

 10 days  =  30 kilometers 

1 day  =  30/10

  =  3 kilometer

Example 5 :

An industrial machine is able to make 80 pens in 8 seconds. What is the rate made per second?

Solution :

Given information :

An industrial machine is able to make 80 pens in 8 seconds.

80 pens  =  8 seconds

1 second  =  80/8

  =  10 pens

Example 6 :

A pencil company used 100 grams of rubber to make 10 pencils, which is a rate of ___ grams per pencil.

Solution :

Given information :

A pencil company used 100 grams of rubber to make 10 pencils.

10 pencils  =  100 grams of rubber

1 pencil  =  100/10

  =  10 grams of rubber

Example 7 :

A lumber company had 4 bundles of wood (24 pieces total). What is the rate of pieces per bundle?

Solution :

Given information :

24 pieces will make 4 bundles

24 pieces  =  4 bundle

1 bundle  =  24/4

  =  6 pieces

Example 8 :

A scientist used 3 gallons of liquid for every 4 hours he works. He uses ____ of a gallon each hour he works.

Solution :

Given information :

A scientist used 3 gallons of liquid for every 4 hours he works.

3 gallons  =  4 hours

1 hour  =  3/4 gallons

Example 9 :

An ice machine used 2 gallons of water after running non-stop for 5 hours. How many gallons of water did it use each hour?

Solution :

Given information :

An ice machine used 2 gallons of water after running non-stop for 5 hours

2 gallons  =  5 hours

1 hour  =  2/5 gallons

Example 10 :

A toy company used 40 pints of plastic to make 5 action figures, which is a rate of ___ pints per figure.

Solution :

Given information :

A toy company used 40 pints of plastic to make 5 action figures

40 pints of plastic  =  5 action figures

1 action figure  =  40/5

=  8 pints
