WORDS FOR OPERATIONS

Words for operations is one of the basic topic in algebra. Students who would like to learn solving word problems in math must study this basic stuff.

This will help us to write numerical expression for word problems or practical problems.

Words for Operations in Math

Note :

Twice means multiply by 2 and thrice means multiply by 3

When we have the above words in the question, we can replace it by the corresponding mathematical symbols. 

Example 1 : 

Write a numerical expression for the quotient of 20 and 5.

Solution :

In the given question we have the word quotient, the corresponding symbol for the word  "quotient" is "÷".

Hence, the numerical expression for the given question is

20 ÷ 5

Example 2 : 

Write a numerical expression for the difference between 42 and 19.

Solution :

In the given question we have the word difference between, the corresponding symbol for the word  "difference between " is "-".

Hence, the numerical expression for the given question is

42 - 19

Example 3 : 

Write a numerical expression for the product of 7 and 12.

Solution :

In the given question we have the word product of, the corresponding symbol for the word  "product of " is "x".

Hence, the numerical expression for the given question is

7 x 12

Example 4 : 

Write a numerical expression for 30 more than 20.

Solution :

In the given question we have the word more than, the corresponding symbol for the word  "more than " is "+".

Hence, the numerical expression for the given question is

30 + 20

Example 5 : 

Write a numerical expression for  100 decreased by 77.

Solution :

In the given question we have the word decreased by, the corresponding symbol for the word  "decreased by" is "-".

Hence, the numerical expression for the given question is

100 - 77
