Answers

1. Answer :

In 5.769, the first digit after the decimal point is 7, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the whole number part 5, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 5.769 rounded to the nearest whole number is 6.

2. Answer :

In 2.345, the first digit after the decimal point is 3, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the whole number part 2 as it is, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 2.345 rounded to the nearest whole number is 2.

3. Answer :

In 7.0592, the first digit after the decimal point is 0, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the whole number part 7 as it is, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 7.0592 rounded to the nearest whole number is 7.

4. Answer :

In 1.9743, the first digit after the decimal point is 9, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the whole number part 1, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 1.9743 rounded to the nearest whole number is 2.

5. Answer :

In 3.4, the first digit after the decimal point is 4, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the whole number part 3 as it is, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 3.4 rounded to the nearest whole number is 3.

6. Answer :

In 8.75, the first digit after the decimal point is 7, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the whole number part 8, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 8.75 rounded to the nearest whole number is 9.

7. Answer :

In 52.79, the first digit after the decimal point is 7, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the whole number part 52, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

Therefore, 52.79% rounded to the nearest whole number is 53%.

8. Answer :

Formula for circumference of a circle :

= 2πr

Substitute r = 8.

= 2π(8)

= 16π

Using calculator for the value of π,

= 50.265......

In 50.265......, the first digit after the decimal point is 2, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the whole number part 50 as it is, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

50.265...... rounded to the nearest whole number is 50.

Therefore, the circumference of the circle is about 50 cm.

9. Answer :

Formula for area of a circle :

= πr2

Substitute r = 12.

= π(12)2

= 144π

Using calculator for the value of π,

= 452.3893.......

In 452.3893......, the first digit after the decimal point is 3, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the whole number part 452 as it is, drop the decimal point and all the digits after it.

452.3893...... rounded to the nearest whole number is 452.

Therefore, the area of the circle is about 452 cm2.

10. Answer :

Instead of rounding to the nearest whole number, Daniel has moved the decimal place.

The correct answer is 7.

11. Answer :

Let A = 7.12 and B = 5.12.

Then the difference is

= 7.12 - 5.12

= 2

Given : Alex rounds A to the nearest whole number and calls his answer C. He rounds B to the nearest whole number and calls his answer D.

Then, C = 7 and D = 5.

The difference is

= 7 - 5

= 2

The difference between A and B and the difference between C and D are same.

But, Alex says that the difference between A and B cannot be the same as the difference between C and D.

So, Alex is incorrect.
