HOW TO ROUND DECIMALS TO THE NEAREST HUNDREDTH

1.547

In the number above, the first digit (5) after the decimal point is tenth, the second digit (4) is hundredth, the third digit (7) is thousandth.

To round a decimal to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit at thousandths place.

(i) If it is 5 or more, increase the digit at hundredths place by one (round up) and drop all the digits to the right of hundredths place.

(ii) If it is less than 5, keep the digit in hundredths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of hundredths place.

Example 1 :

Round 2.0789 to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Since 2.0789 is rounded to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit at thousandths place. The digit at thousandths place is 8, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 7 at hundredths place and drop all the digits to the right of 7.

So, 2.0789 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 2.08.

Example 2 :

Round 1.5601 to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Since 1.5601 is rounded to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit at thousandths place. The digit at thousandths place is 0, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 6 at hundredths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of 6.

So, 1.5601 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 1.56

Example 3 :

Round 9.1056 to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Since 9.1056 is rounded to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit at thousandths place. The digit at thousandths place is 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 0 at hundredths place and drop all the digits to the right of 0.

So, 9.1056 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 9.11.

Example 4 :

Round 0.4236 to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Since 0.4236 is rounded to the nearest hundredth, look at the digit at thousandths place. The digit at thousandths place is 3, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 2 at hundredths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of 2.

So, 0.4236 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 0.42.

Example 7 :

If the radius of the circle is 13 cm, find its circumference. Use the value of π from your calculator and round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Formula for circumference of a circle :

= 2πr

Substitute r = 13.

= 2π(13)

= 26π

Using calculator for the the value of π,

= 81.6814........

We have to round 81.6814........ to the nearest hundredth.

The digit at thousandths place is 1, which is less than 5.

Then, keep the digit 8 at hundredths place as it is and drop all the digits to the right of 8.

81.6814........ rounded to the nearest hundredth is 81.68.

Therefore, the circumference of the circle is about 81.68 cm.

Example 8 :

If the radius of a circle is 9.8 cm, find its area. Use the value of π from your calculator and round your answer to the nearest hundredth.

Answer :

Formula for area of a circle :

= πr2

Substitute r = 9.8.

= π(9.8)2

= 96.04π

Using calculator for the the value of π,

= 301.7185........

We have to round 301.7185........ to the nearest hundredth.

The digit at thousandths place is 8, which is greater than 5.

Then, add 1 to the digit 1 at hundredths place and drop all the digits to the right of 1.

301.7185........ rounded to the nearest hundredth is 301.72.

Therefore, the area of the circle is about 301.72 cm2.

Example 9 :

A student was asked to 78.3245 to the nearest hundredth. He answered 7832.45 Explain the mistake of the student and find the correct answer.

Answer :

Instead of rounding to the nearest hundredth, the student moved the decimal place.

The correct answer is 78.32.
