EVALUATING RATIONAL EXPRESSIONS

To evaluate a rational expression, substitute the given value for the variable/s into the expression and simplify using order of operations or PEMDAS rule.

Evaluate each of the following rational expressions for the given values.

Example 1 :

for x = 5.

Solution :

Substitute x = 5

Use PEMDAS Rule to simplify.

Example 2 :

for x = 4.

Solution :

Substitute x = 4.

Example 3 :

for x = 3.

Solution :

Substitute x = 3.

Example 4 :

for m = 14 and p = 7.

Solution :

Substitute m = 14 and p = 7.

Example 5 :

for p = 3 and m = 9.

Solution :

Substitute p = 3 and m = 9.

Example 6 :

for a = 5 and b = 4.

Solution :

Substitute a = 5 and b = 4.

Example 7 :

for x = 5, y = 6 and z = 3.

Solution :

Substitute x = 5, y = 6 and z = 3.

Example 8 :

for a = 2 and b = 6.

Solution :

Substitute a = 2 and b = 6.

Example 9 :

for p = 4, q = ½ and r = 2.

Solution :

Substitute p = 4, q = ½ and r = 2.

Example 10 :

for p = 4, q = 2 and r = 3.

Solution :

Substitute p = 4, q = 2 and r = 3.
