A comparison of two numbers that is compared to a percent written as fraction.
Percent Proportion OR Translations
IS means equal to (=) OF means multiply WHAT is the missing value or variable.
Type 1 (Finding the Percent) :
Example :
3 is what percent of 4?
Proportion :
Translation :
300 = 4x
Type 2 (Finding the Part) :
Example :
What number is 75% of 4?
Proportion :
Translation :
p = 0.75(4)
Type 3 (Finding the Whole) :
Example :
3 is 75% of what number?
Proportion :
3 = 0.75w
Problem 1 :
2 is what percent of 10?
Solution :
²⁄₁₀ = ˣ⁄₁₀₀
⅕ = ˣ⁄₁₀₀
Multiply both sides by 100.
100(⅕) = x
20 = x
Therefore, 2 is 20% of 10.
Problem 2 :
$9 is 15% of what amount?
Solution :
⁹⁄w = ¹⁵⁄₁₀₀
Take reciprocal on both sides.
ʷ⁄₉ = ¹⁰⁰⁄₁₅
ʷ⁄₉ = ²⁰⁄₃
Multiply both sides by 9.
w = 60
Therefore, $9 is 15% of $60.
Problem 3 :
What number is 20% of 420?
Solution :
ᵖ⁄₄₂₀ = ²⁰⁄₁₀₀
ᵖ⁄₄₂₀ = ¹⁄₅
Multiply both sides by 420.
p = (¹⁄₅)420
p = 84
Therefore, 84 is 20% of 420.
Problem 4 :
A rain barrel can hold 50 gallons of water. If there are 32 gallons inside of it, what percent of the barrel is full?
Solution :
³²⁄₅₀ = ˣ⁄₁₀₀
Multiply both sides by 100 and simplify.
64 = x
Therefore, 64% of the barrel is full.
Problem 5 :
A worker has installed 65% of the tiles for a tile floor. If they installed 130 tiles so far, how many tiles are there in total?
Solution :
¹³⁰⁄w = ⁶⁵⁄₁₀₀
Take reciprocal on both sides.
ʷ⁄₁₃₀ = ¹⁰⁰⁄₆₅
Multiply both sides by 130 and simplify.
w = 200
Therefore, 200 tiles are three in total.
Problem 6 :
One week, seventy-two percent of the animals that came to a veterinary hospital were dogs. If there were 250 animals total, how many were dogs?
Solution :
ᵖ⁄₂₅₀ = ⁷²⁄₁₀₀
ᵖ⁄₂₅₀ = 0.72
Multiply both sides by 250.
p = 180
Therefore, 180 were dogs.
Problem 7 :
What percent of your friends like playing dodge ball if 5 out of 8 of them like playing dodge ball?
Solution :
⅝ = ˣ⁄₁₀₀
Multiply both sides by 100 and simplify.
62.5 = x
Therefore, 62.5% of my friends like playing dodge ball.
Problem 8 :
John has walked 15% of the way home from school. If he has walked 210 meters so far, how far does he walk home from school?
Solution :
²¹⁰⁄w = ¹⁵⁄₁₀₀
Take reciprocal on both sides.
ʷ⁄₂₁₀ = ¹⁰⁰⁄₁₅
ʷ⁄₂₁₀ = ²⁰⁄₃
Multiply both sides by 210 and simplify.
w = 1400
Therefore, John walks home 1400 meters from school.
Problem 9 :
Each day, a bakery makes 50 loaves of wheat bread. If that amount is 20% of all the bread that they bake, how many loaves of all the bread do they bake each day?
Solution :
⁵⁰⁄w = ²⁰⁄₁₀₀
Take reciprocal on both sides.
ʷ⁄₅₀ = ¹⁰⁰⁄₂₀
ʷ⁄₅₀ = 5
Multiply both sides by 50.
w = 250
Therefore, the bakery makes 250 loaves of all the bread each day.
Problem 10 :
There are 1080 students that attend a local high school. 25% of the students are enrolled in advanced placement science. How many students are enrolled in the advanced placement science?
Solution :
ᵖ⁄₁₀₈₀ = ²⁵⁄₁₀₀
ᵖ⁄₁₀₈₀ = 0.25
Multiply both sides by 1080.
p = 270
Therefore, 270 students are enrolled in the advanced placement science.
