Snowflake Bentley STEM Centers
Don’t just learn about snowflakes, invite your students into a hands-on exploration of the unique designs of snowflakes and the work of Wilson Bentley!
Inspired by Jacqueline Briggs Martin's timeless story, we're diving into a series of STEM centers that invite students to create their own snowflakes using diverse materials like KEVA Planks, popsicle sticks, paper, pipe cleaners, and play dough.
1. Paper Snowflakes
In this STEM center, students explore creating snowflakes with paper. There are several different differentiated snowflake templates that students can choose from or they can create their own unique paper snowflake designs.
After students complete their snowflake creations you can use them for bulletin board displays or classroom decorations.
In this pattern block snowflake STEM center, students use tangrams to build snowflake creations. Students can use the included templates or create their own unique snowflake designs.
3. KEVA Plank Snowflakes
In this STEM center, students create unique snowflake designs using KEVA Planks or similar wood planks. Before building students will choose a card that will tell them how many planks to use to build each snowflake creation. If you do not have access to KEVA Planks you can substitute popsicle sticks for this challenge.
4. Playdough Snowflakes
Get ready for students to explore unique snowflake structures using play dough. Students can create their own unique snowflake designs or they can build the snowflakes on the included cards.
5. Popsicle Stick Snowflakes
Get ready to engage your students’ creativity with this popsicle stick snowflake challenge! Challenge students to build a snowflake using the exact number of popsicle sticks on the card. This challenge can also be completed with KEVA Planks if you have access to them.
6. Pipe Cleaner Snowflakes
At this STEM center, students will be getting hands-on by building their own snowflakes out of pipe cleaners. Students can also add beads to their creations as an optional decoration.
7. Snowflake Creativity Challenges
In this center, students will be use their creativity to transform images of snowflakes into other objects.
