Room on the Broom STEM Challenge

Integrate STEM in your classroom this Halloween season with a Room on the Broom themed STEM Challenge!

Is there Room on the Broom?!

Challenge your students to help fit all of the characters in the story on the broom.

Material List:

  • Straws

  • Candy Pumpkins

  • Tape

  • Scissors

  • Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson

After reading Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson challenge your students to build a broom that can fit all of the characters in the story. The characters will be represented with candy pumpkins. If you aren’t able to use candy these can be substituted from something similar like mini pumpkin erasers.

Students will first build their broom using straws and tape. For more of a challenge give students a height requirement. After students construct the broom, challenge them to see how many candy pumpkins they can balance on top.

After the STEM challenge is complete, have students design a new broom for the witch. Integrate persuasive writing by having students write a letter to the witch persuading her to buy their broom.
