How to Catch a Loveosaurus STEM Challenge

Integrate STEM in your classroom this Valentine’s Day with How to Catch a Loveosaurus STEM Challenge!

Looking for a fun February Read Aloud STEM Challenge for Kids?!

This challenge is a great activity to complete and an excellent companion activity after reading How to Catch a Loveosaurus by Alice Walstead and Andy Elkerton. The activity can stand alone, but it is best if students are familiar with the book.

In the story How to Catch a Loveosaurus, the Loveosaurus runs off, and the children try to catch it. As the Loveosaurus runs away it spreads kind messages to encourage others.

The challenge is to design and create a trap that can catch the Loveosaurus. When the time limit is up students will need to be able to describe and demonstrate how their trap works.

Material List:

  • pencils and STEM journals

  • 2 feet of tape

  • cardboard (cereal boxes, toilet paper rolls, etc.)

  • scissors

  • 2 feet of string

  • construction paper

  • Loveosaurus cutout

  • binder clip (to make Loveosaurus cutout stand up)

  • markers or crayons

Students will use the the 6-step Engineering Design Process in this STEM Challenge.

This Valentine’s Day STEM Challenge will conclude as students plan and write a kindness note. Students are encouraged to distribute their kindness note(s) and spread kindness everywhere!
